What Is a Herniated Disc?

You have probably heard about herniated discs before. You likely know this condition has to do with the spine. You are right because disc herniation occurs when something isn’t right with the spinal discs.

Your spine comprises several bones (vertebrae) stacked on each other. To prevent these bones from gliding over each other, they are separated by spinal discs.

When you have a herniated disc, the outer layer of the disc tears, causing the inner contents to leak. Since the spinal column has limited space, disc displacement is likely to impinge on nearby nerves, resulting in unpleasant symptoms.

What Are the Symptoms of Herniated Disc?

If the herniated disc dents pinch a nearby nerve, you may experience little to no symptoms. However, when a nerve is irritated, symptoms include pain, tingling, and numbness in the lower extremities.

Causes of Disc Herniation

As you age, your spinal discs weaken, increasing the risk of herniation. Besides, car accidents, sports accidents, slips, and falls can cause a herniated disc. Sometimes, an awkward twist can cause disc herniation.

How Does a Chiropractor Treat Herniated Discs?

Before embarking on any treatment, our chiropractor has to know the exact cause of your pain. If you show up with symptoms related to disc herniation, we will scrutinize your medical records and administer a limited physical exam to test your mobility and nerve function. Where necessary, we may request x-rays and CT scans to confirm the diagnosis.

After diagnosis, we may use one or a combination of the following chiropractic treatments to treat your herniated discs:

  • Spinal manipulation: This therapy aligns your spinal joints, which can help reduce pressure on the compressed spinal nerves. It also triggers several body reactions, which can help your damaged discs with recovery.
  • Spinal decompression: This technique gently stretches the spine and may help sooth back pain.
  • Corrective exercises: Our chiropractor may recommend stretching exercises to improve mobility and reduce pain.

Testimonials

Reviews By Our Satisfied Patients

  • "I was very impressed with the chiropractic care I received from Dr. Anderson. I had received chiropractic in the past for my neck pain, but not to this level of care. After only a few sessions, my symptoms began to disappear, especially my neck pain, and I know I would not have been able to perform to my everyday work functions without the treatment I received."

Not only has the adjustments helped alleviate my stiffness and aches, but it has helped me have more energy and just feel more balanced over all. A few months ago, I was able to resume a favorite hobby of mine: golf. Due to my previous pain, I never thought that’d be possible."
