.

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is described as feeling like an electric shock down the leg. It can vary in intensity, from a mild ache to severe pain, making it difficult to stand or sit. In addition, sciatica can make it difficult to sleep and can be aggravated by coughing or sneezing.

The most common symptom of sciatica is lower back pain that radiates into the legs. Other symptoms include tingling, numbness, and weakness in the legs.

What Are the Causes of Sciatica?

Sciatica might be caused by several things, including those listed below:

  • Herniated Disc - A herniated disc can occur when the inner gel-like substance of a disc leaks out and puts pressure on the nerve root.
  • Degenerative Disc Disease - This condition occurs when the discs between the vertebrae begin to break down.
  • Spinal Stenosis - This is a condition that occurs when the space around the spinal cord narrows and puts pressure on the nerve roots.
  • Pregnancy - The extra weight can pressure the nerves in the lower back.

How Is Sciatica Diagnosed?

A physical examination and a medical history review are how sciatica is primarily diagnosed. Our chiropractor may order imaging tests, such as an MRI or CT scan, to confirm the diagnosis. In addition, they ensure the sciatic nerve is pinched and rule out other conditions that may cause similar symptoms.

During the physical examination, our chiropractor will ask you about your symptoms and how long you have had them. They will also perform a neurological exam to check for weakness, numbness, and tingling in the legs.

How Is Sciatica Treated?

Sciatica is typically treated with chiropractic care, physical therapy, and exercise. Chiropractic adjustments might help relieve pressure on the pinched sciatic nerve. Physical therapy might help strengthen the nerve muscles to protect them from further injury. Exercise might help stretch and strengthen the muscles. These treatments are typically combined for the best results.

Testimonials

Reviews By Our Satisfied Patients

  • "I was very impressed with the chiropractic care I received from Dr. Anderson. I had received chiropractic in the past for my neck pain, but not to this level of care. After only a few sessions, my symptoms began to disappear, especially my neck pain, and I know I would not have been able to perform to my everyday work functions without the treatment I received."

Not only has the adjustments helped alleviate my stiffness and aches, but it has helped me have more energy and just feel more balanced over all. A few months ago, I was able to resume a favorite hobby of mine: golf. Due to my previous pain, I never thought that’d be possible."
