What Is Sciatica?

The sciatic nerve is one of the major nerves of the body, and this is where sciatic pain comes from. The pain felt by patients with sciatica may be lower back pain, or it may be pain that is felt in the hips, buttocks, and/or in one leg. That's the route of the sciatic nerve, and when it is pinched, it can cause pain along any part of that pathway. There are many ways that the pinched nerve can develop. A bone spur along the spine or a herniated disk can both cause a pinched nerve.

If the spine gets narrowed around this nerve so that it gets compressed, also called spinal stenosis, this is another cause of sciatica. Certain tumors in specific areas as well as medical conditions like diabetes can also cause this nerve pain. When you feel sciatic nerve pain, it may be felt on a single side. You may have mild pain, a moderately painful case of sciatica, or your pain may be severe and keep you from doing all that you need to.

Sciatica Symptoms

If you have pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve, the pain may be sciatica. You might develop lower back pain caused by a pinched nerve, or you may have pain in the back of a single leg. Sciatica pain can cause feelings like electric jolts, burning, or an ache. If you sit for a long time or cough or sneeze, this may cause the pain to be more severe. You might also have tingles or numbness on one side where the pain is. Sciatica can also cause muscle weakness in those areas. To get relief from your sciatic nerve pain, see a chiropractor for treatment.

Testimonials

Reviews By Our Satisfied Patients

  • "I was very impressed with the chiropractic care I received from Dr. Anderson. I had received chiropractic in the past for my neck pain, but not to this level of care. After only a few sessions, my symptoms began to disappear, especially my neck pain, and I know I would not have been able to perform to my everyday work functions without the treatment I received."

  • "I have benefitted tremendously from the chiropractic care I received from Dr. Anderson. Not only has the adjustments helped alleviate my stiffness and aches, but it has helped me have more energy and just feel more balanced over all. A few months ago, I was able to resume a favorite hobby of mine: golf. Due to my previous pain, I never thought that’d be possible."
